Summary: While clinicians may know the fundamentals of evidence-based practice (EBP), many struggle to implement EBP in real-world situations with their clients. Often, this is due to limited research, a lack of high-quality research, or the absence of a clear takeaway from external scientific literature. In this course, participants will learn more about these obstacles and strategies to overcome them. Learning how to navigate these barriers will assist clinicians in making patient-centered and evidence-based clinical decisions. This course is the third in a series of micro courses on Evidence-Based Decision-Making, which use clinical scenario activities to help you to sharpen your EBP skills.

Summary: SLPs and audiologists alike may struggle to implement evidence-based practice (EBP) into their daily practice because they simply don’t have the time or resources to keep up with a rapidly growing research base. ASHA’s Evidence Maps serve as a time-saving, free, online tool that provides clinicians with a quick synopsis of synthesized research related to clinical practice. New and experienced users of the Evidence Maps will learn the ins and outs of features and navigation via a case study and guided practice to better locate and assess relevant research evidence to integrate into clinical decision-making.

Summary: Older adults must make important decisions about their end-of-life care, including power of attorney assignment and advance directives, and those with hearing and other communication disorders need special accommodations to participate in these important decisions to the fullest extent possible. This session discusses the communication needs of patients in the final stages of life, including the use of various hearing technologies, such as hearing aids, personal sound amplifiers, and pocket talkers. The presenters discuss tools to facilitate conversations among patients, family members, and caregivers.

Summary: Many times, patients are taking medications recommended and prescribed from multiple practitioners and sources, and no one provider is responsible for the overall picture, possibly leading to medication-related harm. Thus, it is incumbent upon each member of the patient's health care team to play a role in ensuring a safer medication use experience based on basic principles regarding polypharmacy. This session will use case studies to explore polypharmacy and synergistic effects to help audiologists contribute to positive overall medication results for their patients.

Summary: The field of audiology focuses mostly on the peripheral auditory system-in both diagnosis and management-but other factors (e.g., "hidden hearing loss" and/or reduced cognitive ability) may play a role in an individual's ability to communicate in diverse environments. This session discusses how audiologists can incorporate evoked potential testing into the assessment battery to obtain a more comprehensive picture of auditory function.
Presenter(s): Victoria A Sanchez, AuD, PhD, CCC-A, F-AAA; Ann Clock Eddins, PhD, MBA, CCC-A, FAAA

Summary: Emerging treatment approaches for age-related hearing loss include alternative interventions aimed at ameliorating symptoms and slowing down or even preventing hearing loss, in contrast with current treatment approaches, which focus primarily on amplification and communication strategies. This session will explore up-and-coming approaches, such as pre-clinical investigation of hormones (e.g., Aldosterone) correlated with auditory function; medicinal-related interventions; and challenges to timelines to bring new treatments to market.
Presenter(s): Cheryl A Swit, MS, CCC-SLP

Summary: Audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and assistants strive to provide client-centered, evidence-based care, but they may have questions: What is considered evidence-based practice (EBP)? How do I make an evidence-based clinical decision? Are there tools for simplifying the EBP process? This course illuminates EBP concepts and guides you through clinical scenario activities while highlighting free, time-saving ASHA EBP resources and tools, such as ASHA's EBP Toolkit. Learn new strategies and bolster your evidence-based decision-making skills.

Summary: Many clinicians may feel they lack the time, skills, or competence to effectively address diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); it might feel like one more thing on an already-long list of considerations and requirements. But if we focus on our passion for working with people and change our perspective about providing culturally responsive services, then it's not more work, it is the work. This course discusses the value of addressing DEI as part of audiology and SLP services and provides practical ideas for doing so.

Summary: Audiologists play a vital role in the evaluation and management of individuals who have experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI). This on demand webinar discusses the special considerations for testing and managing auditory and vestibular concerns of adult patients with TBI. The speakers discuss comprehensive audiometry, auditory processing, and vestibular testing as well as share strategies for working with adults with TBI and resources you can pass on to your patients.

Summary: Trauma-informed care is a patient-care model that acknowledges the prevalence of trauma and its impact in our society. By incorporating trauma-informed practices, we can increase patient engagement and efficacy of care. This on demand webinar examines the basic tenets of trauma-informed care, suggests modifications audiologists can make to daily practices, and shares resources for patients and providers.
