Summary: Many clinicians may feel they lack the time, skills, or competence to effectively address diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); it might feel like one more thing on an already-long list of considerations and requirements. But if we focus on our passion for working with people and change our perspective about providing culturally responsive services, then it's not more work, it is the work. This course discusses the value of addressing DEI as part of audiology and SLP services and provides practical ideas for doing so.

Summary: Many of the static assessments administered by speech-language pathologists have some degree of cultural assumptions and are often limited in representing diverse groups. This course provides strategies to assess standardized assessments' cultural and linguistic sensitivity and provides guidance for the use of alternative assessment options.

This on demand webinar reviews the underlying causes of this disproportionality, the role that SLPs can play in prevention, and the importance of nonbiased assessment. The presenter discusses how SLPs can improve the accuracy of language-related disorder identification in schools by leveraging their unique skill set. The webinar presents a framework for disproportionality prevention as well as information about specific assessment methods.

Summary: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to our patients for in-person treatment may be limited and our ability to develop a relationship with patients/caregivers may have taken a toll due to facility protocols to protect against the spread of infection. As health care providers, we must reflect on our abilities to communicate with patients and their families, ensuring understanding of their deficits and treatment options even as we continue through a pandemic. This course provides the clinician with a review of holistic assessments and health literacy approaches that will empower the patient to make informed decisions. This course is a recorded session from the 2021 ASHA Convention Virtual Library (session 2140V).

Summary: This session is a clinical tutorial that uses cases examples to integrate the practices of language sample analysis and fluency assessment. It focuses on the implementation of fluency codes in narrative retell language samples. Speakers provide information on how to identify and accurately code specific types of disfluencies within a narrative retell language sample. The tutorial provides clinicians with practical tools to use in particular narrative retell language samples to assess fluency and language production skills in bilingual and monolingual children. This course is a recorded session from the 2021 ASHA Convention Virtual Library (session 2160V). Content disclosure: This project focuses on the tool "Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT)" to assess fluency in narrative retell language samples.

Summary: Culture plays a foundational role in our daily interactions. Have you ever made a mistake or had a less-than-positive interaction with a student, parent, or colleague and wondered if a cultural misunderstanding is the culprit? This recorded session from ASHA's 2021 Schools Connect online conference shares a case scenario and guided reflection tool to help practitioners process this type of experience through a culturally responsive lens and showing clinicians how to reflect, learn, and make changes in their professional practice.

Summary: Transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) students often have to deal with negative responses that can take a serious toll on their mental health. Research shows that having just one supportive adult in the child's life can significantly reduce these harmful outcomes. This on demand webinar explores—and provides opportunities for practicing—skills for communicating with students and coworkers in gender-inclusive ways and developing a toolbox of allyship with TGNB students.

Summary: This session explores a situation that many school-based SLPs find themselves in: Serving students whose languages and cultures differ from their own. The presenter uses case studies to review the role of monolingual SLPs in evaluating culturally and linguistically diverse students and explores evaluation protocols to help distinguish between communication difference and disorder. This course is a recorded session from the 2022/2023 online conference "Assessment, Eligibility, and Dismissal in Schools: Strategies, Tools, and Decision-Making."

Summary: A significant portion of school-age children speak languages in addition to English. To make appropriate diagnostic decisions when there are few available measures, SLPs must conduct assessments that have good classification accuracy and that are culturally and linguistically appropriate. This session addresses questions about assessments for bilingual or multilingual children, such as: How do we know how to select the best test for clinical diagnostic decision-making? What evidence-based procedures can we use? What are appropriate procedures for interpreting assessment results from children who use different varieties of English? This course is a recorded session from the 2022/2023 online conference "Assessment, Eligibility, and Dismissal in Schools: Strategies, Tools, and Decision-Making."
