Summary: There are many possible causes for childhood dizziness, which differs from adult dizziness. This session discusses the key components of a pediatric vestibular clinic and its staff, common etiologies of dizziness, risk factors of vestibular loss, and signs of vestibular dysfunction in children. Speakers discuss easy ways to adapt your current testing protocol and which tests might be appropriate for each age group.

Summary: This presentation describes the case of a 48-year-old female presenting with vertigo and disequilibrium consistent with mal de debarquement (MdDS) following a weeklong vacation cruise. MRI images, audiometric, and vestibular results are presented, as well as an in-depth review of MdDS and Chiari malformation and their impact on vestibular function and quality of life.

Summary: There is evidence that many factors contribute to the varied performance outcomes among pediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients, including etiology and quality of the electrode neuron interfaces (ENI). This course examines a study that investigated the intersection of these factors by analyzing the records and device settings for 156 children with confirmed diagnoses of either enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) or Connexin-26 mutations.

Summary: This session will examine the diagnosis and treatment of persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD). The session will explore the recently defined criteria for the presentation and symptoms of the disorder as well as describe current and emerging research that is helping clinicians and researchers better understand it. The speaker will also discuss how chronic co-morbid disorders such as migraine and Meniere’s disease should be factored into the treatment of this disorder.

Summary: This course explores the most commonly fit devices for patients whose hearing is significantly poorer in one ear than the other (e.g., single-sided deafness or asymmetric hearing loss) and identify factors that impact device selection and hearing management. Summary: Meniere’s disease (MD) rarely occurs in children. Due to this, care and treatment by knowledgeable clinicians and physicians are lacking. This presentation reviews a case of a 10-year-old male with diagnosed MD, the interdisciplinary approach for care and treatment, the cross-facility approach for obtaining best results, and follow-up hearing aid fitting suggestions for the affected ear. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention.

Summary: Vestibular loss can co-occur with hearing loss. One functional effect of vestibular loss is decreased dynamic visual acuity. There is some speculation that vestibular loss can also affect reading and/or reading acuity. This presentation outlines the relationship between vestibular loss and both dynamic and static visual acuity and its possible effect on reading and other daily activities. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention. The session was developed by, and presenters invited by, Hearing, Tinnitus, and Vestibular Science.
