Summary: In this audio recording, psychologist Via Strong and SLP Rebecca Politis explore the challenges and accomplishments they had working together to treat conversion disorder in a rehab setting. Summary: This journal self-study updates clinicians on advances in the field that can refine current diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Two articles address assessment: One examines how type of stimuli can affect differential diagnosis of CAS, and the other identifies possible red flags in young children by examining characteristics of speech production in infants and toddlers who were later diagnosed with CAS. Two additional articles address advances in intervention for CAS: One looks at the efficacy of adding prosody as a treatment component, and the other explores a model-based treatment protocol.

Summary: Conversion disorder, also commonly known as functional neurological symptom disorder, is a complex and often misunderstood condition that can affect an individual’s communication, cognition, and movement. This webinar will explore all aspects of the psychological disorder, including etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, counseling, and related issues to inform the SLP’s assessment and treatment of the disorder. The speaker will also discuss the SLP’s role specifically in working with children and teens with the disorder as they complete treatment and return to school.

Summary: This webinar will discuss all aspects of echolalia, a complex and often misunderstood language phenomenon. The speaker will discuss the origins of echolalia and review the evidence that supports it as a positive indicator of language development. The speaker will describe how to perform ongoing assessment before and during mitigation, and share intervention strategies to facilitate the transition to self-generated language.

Summary: Children’s verbal skills differ for many different reasons. Some may have a specific deficit in learning language rules and structures; for others, the differences in expression may result from underlying limitations in memory skills, or in the cognitive control and flexibility needed to plan and monitor communication. This webinar examines how limitations in working memory and other executive functions affect language and learning generally. The speaker discusses assessment and intervention strategies related to executive functions.

Summary: The need for community-viable, evidence-based intervention strategies for toddlers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a national priority as earlier diagnosis becomes more common. This webinar will present strategies for taking evidence-based research and applying it to practice. Using video examples, the presenters will discuss the findings from the randomized controlled trial of the Early Social Interaction Project (ESI), which teaches parents how to embed evidence-based intervention strategies and supports in everyday activities in natural environments to promote their child’s active engagement. The webinar will also illustrate strategies for utilizing the Autism Navigator, a collection of web-based courses and tools using extensive video footage, for parents, professionals, and others with the goal of improving outcomes for young children with ASD.

Summary: This course presents a practical framework for cognitive rehabilitation for patients suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Clinicians can use the framework to identify functional treatments that are evidence-based, matched to individualized patient needs, and feasible given the time and resource constraints of the current health care environment. The course explores specific cognitive rehabilitation interventions that patients with a brain injury may find particularly valuable and motivating. The presenters use case studies to discuss how to write functional goals and identify optimum outcome measures.
