Summary: This session reviews the emerging evidence of neurological manifestations of COVID-19 and identifies how SLPs can use their unique position to maximize patient outcomes-whether as a member of an interdisciplinary team or as a solo provider. The session strives to increase clinicians' confidence in their abilities to: identify common cognitive-communication symptoms for patients who have recovered from COVID-19, and evaluate and treat with an individualized, patient-centered approach.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on health care and rehabilitation. SLPs are now treating large numbers of patients who were hospitalized for COVID-19. Meanwhile, another group of patients have emerged-those who experienced relatively mild cases of acute COVID-19 but now present with long COVID, a puzzling and debilitating set of symptoms. This session highlights patient experiences with COVID-19 and its aftermath and what clinicians have learned to date in treating these two groups of patients. The presenter identifies the gaps in care, the challenges that these patients face, and how we can best serve them going forward.

Summary: In this course, two experts in adult learning present proven strategies to help presenters deliver more impactful learning experiences—ones that effectively support a learner’s ability to gain and apply new knowledge or skills. Designed to be used during presentation development, the course explores key takeaways from the science of adult learning (andragogy), highlighting methods that support learning and those that hinder it. The speakers offer practical tips and strategies that can be integrated into presentations of any kind.

Summary: Simulated presence treatment, in which an individual living with dementia watches a video or listens to audio of a familiar person (a family member or doctor), may reduce agitation and confusion and allow the individual to redirect to meaningful activities. This course – which is broken into six 5-minute blocks – will guide SLPs through using this tool to help their clients with dementia. The presenter will share examples of the tool and then walk you through creating simulated presence videos using simple technology for your own clients with dementia, including giving you time to practice and reflect.

The presenter will provide examples of different types of communication, memory, and sequencing aids that can be produced quickly using simple technology. Then she will walk you through a step-by-step template for creating these types of supports for your own clients with dementia, including giving you time to practice and reflect.

Summary: Due to their cognitive-communication deficits, people living with dementia often have difficulty participating in daily activities that they previously enjoyed. This course – which is broken into six 5-minute blocks – will guide SLPs in creating activities to promote recall and increase engagement in daily activities and hobbies, namely memory stations and activities based on the Montessori approach. The presenter will provide examples of these activities and then walk you through a step-by-step template for creating them for your own clients, including giving you time to practice and reflect.

Summary: Person-centered, client-directed evaluations for individuals with dementia lead to personalized, functional intervention goals that permit the individuals to participate in meaningful activities. The presenter will discuss two sample frameworks and case studies for this type of assessment and then take you through a step-by-step template for conducting a person-centered assessment, including giving you time to practice and reflect.
