Summary: This webinar will walk SLPs through the procedures used in flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES; also known as fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing) to evaluate patients with dysphagia. Summary: Evaluating and treating children with selective mutism (SM) presents challenges. These children have the ability to speak but may not do so in social situations where they feel uncomfortable and are expected to speak. A substantial number of children with SM have speech-language deficits and vocal tension, affecting their ability to vocalize and verbalize. To determine a child’s actual communication abilities and plan appropriate treatment, it is important to conduct a comprehensive evaluation with expressive output. This webinar describes a validated evaluation procedure and treatment methods to improve vocal output, enhance meaningful verbalizations, and expand language in individuals with SM.

Summary: This webinar will discuss the anatomical, physiological, neurological, and cognitive factors that affect the speech intelligibility of children and adolescents with Down syndrome. Although there are similarities among people who have this genetic disorder, evaluation and treatment are highly individualized based on specific factors that influence a particular individual’s speech. The speaker will discuss evaluation and treatment planning, including forms that clinicians can use right away in their own practice.

Summary: Voice disorders are a prevalent and persistent problem in older adults. As the number of people over age 65 continues to increase, SLPs likely will see a growing demand for their services to treat age-related communication problems, including disorders related to the “aging voice.” This webinar will explore the typical age-related changes in each of the three major subsystems involved with voice production (respiratory, laryngeal, and resonatory) and explain how these changes affect vocal quality and ability. The presenters also will discuss appropriate assessment and intervention options, providing an overview of medical, surgical, and behavioral treatments.

Summary: SLPs often assess school-age children for speech-sound disorders using a single, standardized test. However, this "one-size-fits-all" approach can yield results that do not account for the impact of speech-sound disorders on other aspects of academic performance. Care providers must recognize symptoms, conditions, and their potential consequences and elevate routine oral hygiene care to oral infection control programs.
