Summary: This course presents a practical framework for cognitive rehabilitation for patients suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Clinicians can use the framework to identify functional treatments that are evidence-based, matched to individualized patient needs, and feasible given the time and resource constraints of the current health care environment. The course explores specific cognitive rehabilitation interventions that patients with a brain injury may find particularly valuable and motivating. The presenters use case studies to discuss how to write functional goals and identify optimum outcome measures.

Summary: The differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children who have a hearing loss is challenging, due in part to the lack of valid standardized assessments for this population. This webinar will explore communication characteristics of children with both ASD and hearing loss and those who are deaf/hard of hearing but do not have ASD, focusing on distinguishing attributes. Awareness of the features that are unique to ASD in the deaf/hard of hearing population will enable clinicians to more accurately identify ASD in these children and lead to earlier access to appropriate and much-needed intervention. The webinar will also highlight the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration when working with children with co-occurring hearing loss and ASD.

Summary: This course is one part of a four-course learning path/course set, Foundations of Effective Supervision. Feedback and reflection is a key component of professional growth—for supervisees and supervisors. Self-assessment plays a vital role in improving the skills of clinical educators, preceptors, mentors, and supervisors, and this course will provide the opportunity for clinicians to explore their own competencies in supervision based on the results of a self-assessment tool. The course will discuss specific competencies from five overall knowledge and skill areas and give participants the opportunity to brainstorm and share scenarios. Participants will walk away with specific goals to improve their knowledge, skills, and competencies in supervision.

Summary: This course includes four recorded sessions from the 2017 online conference “Dysphagia in Older Adults.” These sessions include points to keep in mind when counseling older adults with dysphagia and their families or caregivers about nutrition, diet, and other topics. The conference included a total of 13 sessions, with the broad goal of giving clinicians new, evidence-based strategies for improving overall quality of life for older adults.

Summary: Inadequate oral hygiene practices can contribute to or result in severe localized and systemic illnesses, significantly altering the health status and well-being of older adults. Care providers must recognize symptoms, conditions, and their potential consequences and elevate routine oral hygiene care to oral infection control programs. This session from the 2017 online conference “Dysphagia in Older Adults” identifies possible oral hygiene complications—from oral pain to pneumonia—and discusses how to recognize and assess them. Speaker John Ashford also addresses the importance of standardized intervention.

Summary: In order to select the appropriate treatment techniques for oral and pharyngeal dysphagia in adults, clinicians need to understand the physiology of swallowing. This introductory course discusses the principles of neuroplasticity and motor learning as they relate to the effects of injury to the central nervous system and the potential results of swallowing intervention. The presenter discusses examples of neuromuscular treatment for pharyngeal dysphagia and gives tips on analyzing evidence and applying a theory-driven approach.
