Summary: Endotracheal intubation can have a significant impact on both swallow function and laryngeal integrity. When consulted after extubation, SLPs may have questions such as: How long after extubation should the assessment occur? What can I learn from a bedside swallow exam and is it enough? What findings should prompt an ENT referral? This session will examine current research to inform clinical decision-making and discuss the early utilization of flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) to identify deficits and guide clinicians to make appropriate referrals.

Summary: Working with critically ill patients with complex case presentations requires the use of not only evidence-based practices but also creativity to develop individualized treatment programs and advocate for additional services. Summary: SLPs may provide services for patients with upper and lower airway disorders, including those with tracheostomies and mechanical ventilation, at any level across the continuum of care. This panel brings together SLPs from acute care, long-term acute care hospital, and home health care backgrounds to discuss working with this population across different settings. The panel addresses similarities and differences across settings, what an SLP going into one of these settings can do to prepare for working with this population, considerations for transitioning between settings, and more.

Summary: In this course, three SLPs share their perspectives on working with multilingual students and overcoming challenges and barriers to equitable and effective augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interventions. The course explores practical strategies, tools, and templates to help SLPs engage students and families, support multiple languages in AAC devices for students who are speaking or nonspeaking, and advocate for affirming practices that center the whole child.

Summary: This session describes predictors of hearing aid use time for adolescents who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) as well as activities that target self-advocacy in this population. Summary: This session describes a research investigation of speech recognition in quiet and noise in thousands of patients with varying degrees of hearing loss. Based on the data, the speaker provides clinical recommendations in which speech recognition in noise can become the default test of speech perception in routine audiologic assessment, and word recognition in quiet is only performed when it is likely to be suboptimal.

Summary: This session presents a brief overview of central auditory processing skills, assessment procedures, and results interpretation, followed by a review of multiple clinical cases of adult patients evaluated for central auditory processing disorder (CAPD)/deficits at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. The presenter focuses specific attention on connecting each patient's documented site-of-lesion with presenting auditory symptoms and CAPD evaluation results.

Summary: This presentation highlights case studies exhibiting the SLP's role in assessing and treating previously healthy toddlers with disorders of consciousness in the acute rehab setting. These case studies demonstrate the opportunities and challenges of utilizing the pediatric Coma Recovery Scale when assessing these patients, the relationship between emerging oral motor skills and cognition, and treatment approaches for returning to PO intake in this population. Finally, these case studies highlight how interdisciplinary collaboration is one of the keys to success with this patient population.

Summary: In this session, the authors briefly review the literature on the developmental risks and auditory effects of pediatric unilateral hearing loss. Then, members of the Boston Children's Hospital's Cochlear Implant team discuss (a) the interdisciplinary evaluation process for determining candidacy for cochlear implantation, (b) the institution's aural rehabilitation protocol post-surgery, (c) specific outcome measures used to determine benefit, and (d) initial audiological outcomes for cochlear implant users with single-sided deafness.
