Summary: Motivation often declines as children reach adolescence. Poor motivation inhibits participation and engagement in language-based interventions. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how intervention can be designed to increase client motivation to participate in therapy while improving language-based literacy skills. This session presents motivation and behavior change techniques based on self-determination theory. It also includes examples of how to integrate these techniques into interventions with adolescent clients to satisfy their need for autonomy, relatedness, and competence while simultaneously addressing language-based literacy deficits.

Summary: Many clinicians may feel they lack the time, skills, or competence to effectively address diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); it might feel like one more thing on an already-long list of considerations and requirements. But if we focus on our passion for working with people and change our perspective about providing culturally responsive services, then it's not more work, it is the work. This course discusses the value of addressing DEI as part of audiology and SLP services and provides practical ideas for doing so.

Summary: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, students, SLPs, and educational specialists faced unprecedented challenges and stressors related to learning and service delivery procedures. This session shares results from a study that explored resilience among high school students with language learning disabilities during the transition to online instruction as a result of the pandemic.

Summary: This session explores the strong and complex relationship between pediatric mental and behavioral health and skills in cognition, language, and social communication. The session reviews a speech-language pathology program and service delivery model for youth receiving acute psychiatric care at one of the nation’s top pediatric hospitals, emphasizing the distinct role of SLPs in providing care to youth with mental and behavioral illnesses.
