Summary: This journal self-study course addresses the effectiveness of various aphasia treatments, a topic that many researchers explored at the 51st Clinical Aphasiology Conference (CAC) in North Carolina. Published in a special issue of the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, these articles examine specific interventions for particular patient populations, including individuals with stroke-induced aphasia, those with acquired apraxia of speech, those with anomia, and those with Alzheimer's dementia.

Summary: Neurodivergent SLPs (including those with dyslexia, ADHD, anxiety, autism, etc.) have unique insights and expertise, making them invaluable assets for fostering client-centered care within speech-language pathology practice. In this session, three neurodivergent SLPs who started their own private practices due to lack of supportive and accessible options discuss employment and supervision barriers. They share systemic and individualistic shifts to support neurodivergent SLPs.

Summary: In this SIG 20 activity, Medina and Mead share a study of Hispanic/Latina SLP graduate students’ perceptions of mindfulness. Participants in this study discuss the benefits of mindfulness and their willingness to practice; however, stigmatizing beliefs and lack of education about mindfulness within their cultural communities need to be addressed. Readers of this article will gain a better understanding of how to promote mindfulness in future speech-language pathologists.

Summary: These SIG 5 articles discuss surgical and parent-led therapy approaches for improved speech and resonance outcomes, and describe characteristics needed in an evaluation to analyze clinically obtained data for research purposes. Summary: In this SIG 2 activity, participants explore innovative articles regarding a range of topics in the assessment and treatment of motor speech disorders. The first article describes a case of anarthria in which the speech-language pathologist thoroughly described the patient’s motor speech presentation, thereby contributing to his overall neurologic diagnosis. The second article examines the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a promising method of eliciting behavior change through brain stimulation, on the speech of individuals with Parkinson’s disease. The third article explores the speech and language profiles of children with apraxia of speech as their primary diagnosis, as compared to children with other concomitant diagnoses.
