Summary: This session focuses on the use of in-situ measures and development of patient amplification prescriptions. The importance of in-situ measures is widely overlooked or misunderstood. Summary: Early childhood is a critical period for auditory, language, and cognitive development, and early identification of permanent hearing loss provides the opportunity for children to receive appropriate and timely intervention and educational services. When children are identified late, they are at increased risk of permanent speech, language, and educational delays. Summary: It is commonly understood that better outcomes for management and treatment of hearing loss can be linked to greater knowledge and acceptance of the condition by the patient/client/student and their families. Knowledge is power. However, often individuals and their families do not have access to an impartial site hosting a variety of resources for review. This presentation discusses the need and development of an accessible and neutral site where individuals and their families can access diverse information and a variety of literature around topics related to hearing loss. It will also cover the steps for the development of a cultural and informational center, including tips on fundraising and overall management.

One way to address the challenges of including a diverse group of participants is by developing community-based research partnerships. Summary: This session discusses a project that established a cross-sector national consortium of self-advocates with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), family advocates, community providers, and health care professionals. The consortium guides and evaluates an environmental scan and literature review on best practices in educating health care professional students in the care of persons with IDD, including health care professional students addressing communication disorders.
