Summary: Social communication involves the integration of language processing, pragmatics, and social and emotional learning, and is a challenge for children who present with developmental language disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and social communication disorder. This session presents a bibliotherapeutic intervention approach that SLPs can implement within a plan-do-review format. This practical approach utilizes brief (~15 minutes) story sharing, story enactment, and journaling activities. The speakers present preliminary efficacy data for the intervention approach as well as provide materials and resources for its implementation. This course is a recorded session from the 2020/2021 online conference “Practical Solutions for Elementary Assessment, Treatment, and Collaboration.”

Summary: The lived experiences of neurodivergent adolescents and adults reveal that changes are needed in how SLPs approach social communication assessment and intervention. Client-centered protocols for assessing social communication must address two goals: the needs of the student, and the perspectives and behaviors of the student's peers that support or hinder social interactions. This session presents strategies and tools for addressing both goals. This course is a recorded session from the 2022/2023 online conference "Assessment, Eligibility, and Dismissal in Schools: Strategies, Tools, and Decision-Making."

Summary: This journal self-study updates clinicians on advances in the field that can refine current diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Two articles address assessment: One examines how type of stimuli can affect differential diagnosis of CAS, and the other identifies possible red flags in young children by examining characteristics of speech production in infants and toddlers who were later diagnosed with CAS. Two additional articles address advances in intervention for CAS: One looks at the efficacy of adding prosody as a treatment component, and the other explores a model-based treatment protocol.

Summary: When assessing and analyzing the speech sound mastery of preschool and early elementary-age children with highly unintelligible speech, it can be challenging to measure baseline and progress in an unbiased, meaningful manner. This session discusses how to start a child moving quickly toward intelligibility by using simple and effective assessment practices, while also easing the workload for periodic progress monitoring. This course is a recorded session from the 2022/2023 online conference "Assessment, Eligibility, and Dismissal in Schools: Strategies, Tools, and Decision-Making."

Summary: Dyslexia and developmental language disorders (DLD) – relatively common, language-based disorders that affect children’s reading and academic achievement as well as social and life outcomes – frequently co-occur in the same child. This session examines the differences between the two disorders, how to identify children at risk for either or both, and how to provide treatment and accommodations to promote positive outcomes. The speaker discusses evidence-based practices for assessing and treating reading difficulties.

Summary: This journal self-study includes select papers that were presented at the 2017 Clinical Aphasiology Conference in Snowbird, Utah. The articles reflect the wide array of topics presented on aphasia treatment, tools, and outcomes. Also included is an article that ties ideas from the conference keynote to research in communication disorders. Clinicians can expand their knowledge by learning about the current state of aphasia research.

Summary: This session describes how to work effectively within the constraints of school-based structures to improve outcomes for elementary school children on the autism spectrum. The speaker highlights key differences between a skills-based vs. supports-based approach to peer interaction in a school-based setting. In addition, she uses two case studies to walk through key elements of designing a supports-based approach—including goal-writing, activity selection, and strategy implementation.
