Summary: Each adult with dysphagia presents with unique characteristics, each setting provides different challenges, and each treatment team functions in different ways. Summary: Cultural responsiveness is an approach that uses both cultural knowledge/competence and cultural humility to honor a client's culture across all aspects of their treatment and learning. Cultural responsiveness is a fluid approach and requires partnership with a client as well as self-reflection. This micro course explores questions related to cultural responsiveness, like, "What does a culturally responsive interaction look and feel like?" and "How might one situation elicit many different reactions or perceptions?"

Summary: This on demand webinar will discuss evaluating children with voice disorders, including determining the appropriate clinical path to a comprehensive voice evaluation. Summary: Clinicians who practice dysphagia management can easily generate a mental image of a "normal" swallow. Frequently, words such as "unsafe," "inefficient," or "at-risk" accompany images of swallows that deviate from normal. This session carefully examines the complexities and pitfalls of using these types of terms with patients, families, and/or medical providers. In particular, the speakers discuss how the SLP's notion of what constitutes safety and efficiency can influence diet recommendations and treatment plans. This session tackles the complexities of the meaning behind the words and phrases that influence and underlie clinical decisions and how SLPs communicate them to patients and other stakeholders.

Summary: These SIG 12 Perspectives articles provide information on current issues associated with visual processing of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) displays for people with traumatic brain injury, assessment of the expressive language abilities of Spanish-speaking children who rely on AAC, and culturally sensitive approaches to aided language modeling. Readers will be more adept at designing effective AAC displays for adults with traumatic brain injury and at providing AAC services to children from multilingual and multicultural backgrounds.

Summary: Geriatric care provides both unique opportunities and challenges for speech-language pathologists. SLPs working in geriatric settings often face ethical dilemmas associated with various aspects of clinical care, including the decision-making process, patient preferences and respecting patient rights, care planning, end-of-life situations, provision of services, and other issues. This panel discussion addresses the issues faced by SLPs in their daily practice and shares knowledge and resources to address these challenges.
