Summary: Early childhood is a critical period for auditory, language, and cognitive development, and early identification of permanent hearing loss provides the opportunity for children to receive appropriate and timely intervention and educational services. Given the cascading effects auditory deprivation and language delays may cause in children, providing differential diagnoses can present a challenge.
