Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our patients in unusual ways. Patients with COVID-19 can present with a variety of symptoms: from loss of taste and smell, to fatigue, shortness of breath, and coughing. This session reviews current available evidence regarding best practices for dysphagia management for patients with COVID-19 in acute care and during their rehabilitation, including working through a case study.

Summary: This course features moderated discussions among a panel of clinicians who collectively provide cochlear implant auditory rehabilitation (AR) to patients of all ages. Topics and discussions demonstrate the need to expand and differentiate intervention approaches based on the unique needs of individual patients with cochlear implants. Panelists review recent studies, present translational applications, share case studies and examples, illustrate multidisciplinary professional roles, and discuss evidence-based assessment and treatment. Summary: In this SIG 4 activity, learners will read three peer-reviewed articles centered on cluttering in preadolescent through adult speakers. The first article is a case study of a preadolescent with cluttering. In this paper, the authors highlight brain development during adolescence, adolescent cognitive and emotional development, and the effects of a therapy approach based on objective speech measures. The second article is a research study concerned with disfluency clusters produced by adults with cluttering in natural conversations. The authors describe how disfluency clusters are affected by the nature of the relationship between speakers. The last article presents qualitative data from a focus group of adults with cluttering who have emerged as community leaders. Their reflections include recommendations for listeners and support groups, self management, and their thoughts on labels and acronyms.

Summary: This session provides the framework required to evaluate and treat swallowing difficulties for patients who require high flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy. The presenter reviews typical breathing and swallowing relationships, highlighting the impact altered respiratory conditions have on the swallow. The session also includes extensive discussion of high flow nasal cannula, its impact on the upper aerodigestive tract, and potential effects on physiologic swallowing.
