Summary: Self-directed speech, or self-talk, can support preschool and school-age children's executive functioning, but this type of non-social speech is often delayed in children with communication disorders. This session explores the link between self-directed speech and executive functioning and describes strategies SLPs can use to facilitate the use of self-directed speech during intervention to support executive functioning and reduce challenging behaviors.

Summary: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a confounding pediatric communication disorder. Rarely occurring in isolation, changing over time, and always requiring specialized care, the breadth and depth of understanding required for appropriate treatment is vast. This session explores precursors to motor learning, discusses considerations for target selection, and explains how to apply and manipulate the principles of motor learning to optimize task complexity.

Summary: This session discusses the use of valid assessment practices to differentiate childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) from other speech sound disorders. It also provides a framework for preferred treatment practices that focus on increasing meaningful communication. Summary: This presentation highlights case studies exhibiting the SLP's role in assessing and treating previously healthy toddlers with disorders of consciousness in the acute rehab setting. These case studies demonstrate the opportunities and challenges of utilizing the pediatric Coma Recovery Scale when assessing these patients, the relationship between emerging oral motor skills and cognition, and treatment approaches for returning to PO intake in this population. Finally, these case studies highlight how interdisciplinary collaboration is one of the keys to success with this patient population.

Summary: Effective communication is a foundational leadership function and a vital characteristic of a competent leader. Given the unique role, leaders play in driving change and leading others through challenges, communication for leaders is much more complicated and nuanced than for individual contributors. Leaders who are skilled communicators create mutual understanding, harmony, and action by adapting their communication styles based on situational factors.
