Summary: Policymakers are pressing health care providers to track-and therefore get paid according to-patient outcomes. At the same time, patients are savvier and demanding more accountability from providers. This session explores how audiologists can incorporate patient function and outcomes data in clinical decision-making and patient counseling in order to stay relevant as the primary provider of hearing health care services.

Summary: This session reviews information regarding the team-based assessment and management of patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and comorbid tinnitus symptoms. Summary: This session analyzed the correlation between the binaural summation measured via acoustic reflex thresholds and the results of the masking level difference established for 500 Hz in 60 participants. The Pearson Correlation Analyses between the MLD values and the binaural summation revealed a significant (r= 0.277; p = 0.032) correlation when the probe stimulus was presented to the right ear and the reflex evoking clicks were presented to the left ear. Although the correlation is significant, the effect size is small, suggesting that each measure may provide information about both similar and different aspects of binaural processing and can be included in a battery of auditory processing disorders (APD) tests.

Summary: Ototoxic medications and chemical agents in the workplace can put individuals' hearing and vestibular health at risk for permanent injury. Proactive ototoxicity management (OtoM) strategies aim to minimize exposure, avoid onset of symptoms, provide ongoing monitoring, and manage auditory and vestibular changes as the clinical needs of the patient evolve. During a 2021 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Special Interest Groups Open House, members of the International Ototoxicity Management Group discussed how best to integrate OtoM into routine clinical practice, what tools to use, and what special considerations need to be understood to best support patients and their families. Here, we have summarized their viewpoints to encourage widespread adoption of improved OtoM services for at-risk individuals. The field of audiology needs to move to a place where we better understand the full extent of ototoxicity and can agree on expanding minimum guidelines that can be implemented more universally to mitigate, detect, and manage the damage from ototoxic exposures. Only recently has our field seen a therapeutic drug that can protect against ototoxicity; however, the population served is restricted only to children receiving treatment for nonmetastatic carcinoma. This is hopefully just the beginning of future therapeutic interventions to come, but, in the meantime, ototoxicity resulting from other medications in different patient populations and chemical agents persists.

The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted digital solutions for remote care not as a convenience but as an essential tool for safe health access. This course reviews basic concepts underlying teleaudiology and explores current trends and future directions in this rapidly changing space. A range of new trends in digital audiology, including novel technologies and service-delivery models, are explored with consideration of future directions.
