Summary: This course describes the various ways that a head and neck cancer diagnosis can impact mental health, and ways to identify when a patient may need to seek professional help from a mental health specialist. The speaker highlights how a speech-language pathologist can assist in the detection of a potential mental health disorder through use of mental health screenings and head-and-neck-specific quality-of-life measures, and discusses considerations for addressing mental health and effectively navigating challenges that may impede success during treatment and/or rehabilitation.

Summary: Narrative discourse is an important goal for many students across the age span but can be difficult to characterize and track over time due to the multitude of progress monitoring tools to choose from. This session highlights that one narrative assessment approach does not fit all students and that clinicians need to be able to select a rubric that is sensitive to changes in language ability as it becomes more complex over time. The presenter explores currently available rubrics and scoring systems for measuring oral narrative proficiency that utilize different elicitation procedures and scoring criteria and describes a continuum of narrative ability that can serve as a guideline for choosing rubrics that best serve progress monitoring needs for individual students. Summary: In this SIG 2 activity, participants explore innovative articles regarding a range of topics in the assessment and treatment of motor speech disorders. The first article describes a case of anarthria in which the speech-language pathologist thoroughly described the patient’s motor speech presentation, thereby contributing to his overall neurologic diagnosis. The second article examines the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a promising method of eliciting behavior change through brain stimulation, on the speech of individuals with Parkinson’s disease. The third article explores the speech and language profiles of children with apraxia of speech as their primary diagnosis, as compared to children with other concomitant diagnoses.

Summary: SLPs are often underutilized in home health (HH) care settings despite the value they bring to patient care and outcomes. With the recent expansion of Medicare's home health value-based purchasing (HHVBP) model, the need for SLPs will only increase. LeftonGreif review high-flow nasal cannula mechanisms of action, its use in specific populations and settings, and what is known about initiation of feeding during this therapy. Finally, Donna Edwards and colleagues explore the impact of COVID-19 on modifications in clinical practice related to pediatric feeding disorders and dysphagia via telehealth.

Summary: Dysphagia may be caused by many underlying medical etiologies, and the hospital-based SLP must navigate a comprehensive world of medical diagnoses and be prepared to accurately evaluate and plan dysphagia treatment. This session presents a model for using medical chart review, online resources, swallow mechanism knowledge, and cultivated diagnostic and treatment skills to approach dysphagia in patients with any medical diagnosis.

Summary: Motivation often declines as children reach adolescence. Poor motivation inhibits participation and engagement in language-based interventions. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how intervention can be designed to increase client motivation to participate in therapy while improving language-based literacy skills. This session presents motivation and behavior change techniques based on self-determination theory. It also includes examples of how to integrate these techniques into interventions with adolescent clients to satisfy their need for autonomy, relatedness, and competence while simultaneously addressing language-based literacy deficits.

Summary: Effective communication is a foundational leadership function and a vital characteristic of a competent leader. Given the unique role, leaders play in driving change and leading others through challenges, communication for leaders is much more complicated and nuanced than for individual contributors. Leaders who are skilled communicators create mutual understanding, harmony, and action by adapting their communication styles based on situational factors. Harnessing the power to communicate effectively is one of a leader's most critical skills, especially during crises or significant setbacks.
