Summary: Learning to gesture or use aided AAC for intentional communication with a partner is challenging for some infants and toddlers with complex communication needs. This session explores a variety of intervention strategies that improve pre-intentional and intentional communication skills using various AAC modalities and some of which incorporate families and caregivers. The speaker shares live illustrations and video examples of young children who have various difficulties with pre-intentional communication and problem solves about how intervention can structure the learner’s experiences to fill in gaps. Summary: This SIG 1 Perspectives activity focuses on the relationship between language and executive function (EF) in children with specific language impairment (SLI) and/or developmental language disorder (DLD). A clinical model of language therapy for adolescents with DLD and concomitant EF deficits was proposed. Finally, a theoretical framework for understanding and promoting metacognition and EF as part of assessment and treatment plans for speech-language pathologists was discussed.

Summary: This course explores an effective technique for building complex narrative language and thought. By "pressing pause," SLPs and students can take time to talk about and connect "thoughts" (mental states) to elements of story grammar such as initiating events, feelings, and plans. This process is integral for discovering intentions and motivations, perspective-taking, thinking critically, solving problems, and participating in social situations. Speakers also discuss a powerful way to teach "inference" using film "jump cuts."

Summary: Cultural competence can be defined as the knowledge and skills a provider requires in order to meet the social, cultural, and linguistic needs of clients, patients, and/or students while providing impactful services. This micro course explores questions like, "What are ways I can obtain information about the cultural traditions, preferences, and experiences of a client, patient, or student?" and "How can I partner with them to gain this essential information?"

Summary: This session explores concrete strategies for how to implement neurodiversity-affirming supports within the current special education landscape. The session reviews strategies for rewriting commonly used terminology, incorporating autistic perspectives, and changing aspects of the school environment to benefit autistic students. Summary: This webinar is for audiologists and SLPs who are currently supervising-or planning to supervise-students, clinical fellows, or other professionals, as well as for supervisees.
