Summary: This session explores treatment targets and evidence-based practices to improve language and literacy outcomes for school-age children who are Deaf or hard of hearing. The speakers outline the heterogeneity that exists in the Deaf and hard of hearing population, summarize recent literature on predictors of language and literacy outcomes as well as the current status of literacy attainment in this population, and discuss evidence-based strategies to improve language and literacy outcomes.

Summary: This course is one part of a four-course learning path/course set, Foundations of Effective Supervision. Feedback and reflection is a key component of professional growth—for supervisees and supervisors. Self-assessment plays a vital role in improving the skills of clinical educators, preceptors, mentors, and supervisors, and this course will provide the opportunity for clinicians to explore their own competencies in supervision based on the results of a self-assessment tool. The course will discuss specific competencies from five overall knowledge and skill areas and give participants the opportunity to brainstorm and share scenarios. Participants will walk away with specific goals to improve their knowledge, skills, and competencies in supervision.

Summary: The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) was established to develop evidence-based guidelines for supporting infants and young children who are deaf or hard of hearing. In 2019, the JCIH published an updated position statement based on expertise from stakeholder groups – including audiologists, SLPs, pediatricians, early intervention providers, otolaryngologists, and professionals from the Deaf community. This course describes the major changes in the JCIH position statement as well as clinical implications for any professional involved in serving children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families. This course – part of the SIGnature Series – was developed by SIG 9: Hearing and Hearing Disorders in Childhood.

Summary: Modifying diet consistencies is one of the more common approaches to dysphagia care. However, much controversy remains regarding how SLPs tackle decision-making and about the actual modification and measurement of liquids and foods in terms of nutrition and safety as primary goals of dysphagia treatment. Summary: Often, SLPs working with individuals with dysphagia struggle with knowing when it is appropriate to discharge their patient. The decision to discharge is multifactorial, including both patient- and clinician-driven factors. Summary: Fingerspelling is prominent among educated deaf and culturally Deaf adults who use American Sign Language (ASL). Research suggests that d/Deaf signers use the same cognitive processes in "reading" fingerspelling that they use in reading print. This session reports comparative measures of speechreading across three tests of varied difficulty in 44 d/Deaf adults who also took a pseudo-word fingerspelling test presented with and without mouth movements. Presenters translate findings to encourage clinical research and practical application for audiologists and speech-language pathologists working with hard-of-hearing and deaf adults.
