Summary: In the rising digital era, and especially since the pandemic, implementation of telehealth and provision of auditory rehabilitation (AR) using digital platforms have notably increased. This has changed the outlook of service provision by audiologists and speech-language pathologists alike. Digital platforms have the potential to positively impact AR practices by improving accessibility of rehabilitation services as well as by facilitating a more effective way to share resources with both professionals and end users. This SIG 7 activity includes two articles about the accessibility and effectiveness of digital platforms to provide AR services for both adults and children with hearing difficulties. The first article discusses the differences in the distribution strategy, users’ experience, and satisfaction for two digital platforms (a static website and an active blog) offering AR materials for professionals. Their study concludes that social media–focused active distribution is effective because it results in more total traffic, a greater number of users, more frequent access, and an overall high level of satisfaction with the quality of information and resources. The second article discusses the details of a Zoom-based telepractice initial evaluation protocol used by speech-language pathologists serving children who are hard of hearing and their families. This clinical protocol was designed to synchronously share resources and questionnaires with family members of children who are hard of hearing. Authors suggest that providing AR services through telepractice facilitates high-quality diagnostics and counseling to the same extent as that of in-person diagnostic sessions.

Summary: In this series of articles, the need for clear guidelines in graduate education on the topic of transgender voice and communication is explored through an e-survey. Considerations for culturally competent voice care is presented in the context of two case studies. Case studies are also used to highlight the importance of an interdisciplinary gender affirming approach for successful voice care with adolescence. In the final article, a voice technique is adapted for voice masculinization.

Summary: This session reviews how to collaboratively determine educational need for voice disorder treatment within the school setting. The speaker discusses how school-based clinicians can advocate for students with voice disorders and their families by facilitating improved access to high-quality and comprehensive voice diagnostic and treatment services. The session explores practical strategies for collaboratively screening, assessing, and treating voice disorders as well as strategies for recruiting and leading a team of medical and educational professionals, school staff, student peers, and family members. Lastly, the session explores how to advocate for students with voice disorders in the classroom and how to create a school environment that supports healthy voice use. This course is a recorded session from the 2020/2021 online conference “Practical Solutions for Elementary Assessment, Treatment, and Collaboration.”

Summary: This journal self-study course is composed of papers from the 7th Aging and Speech Communication Conference (April 2019). The articles cover a range of topics about speech processing in normal aging, including changes in auditory pathways and cortical structures in older adults with and without hearing loss; the relationship between cognitive skills and hearing performance in older adults; speech perception of older and younger adults when certain linguistic factors are manipulated; and age-related effects of processing accented speech in native and non-native speakers.

Summary: Emerging treatment approaches for age-related hearing loss include alternative interventions aimed at ameliorating symptoms and slowing down or even preventing hearing loss, in contrast with current treatment approaches, which focus primarily on amplification and communication strategies. This session will explore up-and-coming approaches, such as pre-clinical investigation of hormones (e.g., Aldosterone) correlated with auditory function; medicinal-related interventions; and challenges to timelines to bring new treatments to market.

Summary: These SIG 8 Perspectives articles focus on topics that are important in promoting public health audiology. In “Fundamentals of Epidemiology for the Audiologist,” Torre and Reavis provide an overview of basic epidemiologic concepts including study design, prevalence, incidence, risk ratios, and odds ratios. The authors emphasize that an understanding of epidemiology is crucial for audiologists for a variety of reasons, including to help them assess the quality of publications, evaluate and discuss the efficacy of screening methods, and evaluate and communicate risk factors for ear and hearing problems. In “Hearing Health Care Delivery Outside the Booth,” Gates, Hecht, Grantham, Fallon, and Martukovich review the literature on boothless audiometry and introduce current tools used to deliver hearing health care outside of the traditional clinic setting. From their review, the authors conclude that boothless audiometry technology provides an opportunity for audiologists to expand services to nontraditional settings such as waiting grooms and nursing homes, increasing access to care, early identification, and intervention, and therefore improving health outcomes.
Evaluating and Enhancing Children's Phonological Skills: A Systematic Approach

Summary: This on demand webinar will explore service delivery modifications as well as evaluation and treatment principles for velopharyngeal dysfunction in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic. Speakers will address service delivery considerations during the pandemic for individuals with cleft palate and associated craniofacial or velopharyngeal conditions who may experience resonance, speech sound production, voice, feeding and swallowing, dental and orthodontic, hearing, and psychosocial difficulties. Summary: Individuals with hearing loss experience negative psychosocial consequences such as distress, depression, and loneliness. If they also experience excessive negative emotional responses (i.e., confusion, frustration, anger) or reduced positive emotional responses (i.e., happiness) compared to listeners with normal hearing, they might be unmotivated to approach communication situations. This course describes a study whose purpose was to determine the feasibility of using facial expressions to measure emotional responses.
