Summary: This course introduces the ASHA Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) Skills Inventory as a tool that SLPs can use to identify and communicate with SLPAs about clinical strengths and opportunities for growth. Routine reflection using the Skills Inventory can support collaborative planning between the SLPA and supervising SLP. Together, they can cultivate excellence in their clinical service delivery. The course will introduce the tool and illustrate its use through case studies.

Summary: SLPs are increasingly involved in the care of patients with head and neck cancer. While preventative dysphagia services are accepted as standard of care, many clinicians don't have the background in this population to determine how to best evaluate and treat patients prior to radiation. Summary: This course explores an effective technique for building complex narrative language and thought. By "pressing pause," SLPs and students can take time to talk about and connect "thoughts" (mental states) to elements of story grammar such as initiating events, feelings, and plans. This process is integral for discovering intentions and motivations, perspective-taking, thinking critically, solving problems, and participating in social situations. Speakers also discuss a powerful way to teach "inference" using film "jump cuts."

Summary: This course explores Innovating & Situating Practice in Rich Environments (InSPiRE), a novel approach to aphasia intervention. InSPiRE works with clinicians to recognize discourse patterns typical of restricted and rich environments and to apply discourse practices strategically, both to enrich clinical activities and to promote improved communication between individuals with aphasia and their everyday communication partners.
