Summary: This course focuses on the prevalence and identification of communication disorders in Japan, Guatemala, and global contexts. The first study, conducted in Japan, examines the prediction of special educational needs in children who stutter using a screening test for three neurodevelopmental disorders. The second study explores clinical practices for speech sound disorders in Guatemala, particularly the use of nonspeech oral motor exercises. Summary: This session summarizes a study of two groups of college students (25 with developmental language disorder [DLD], 25 with typical language [TL]) who were compared on measures of length, complexity, and quality of their expository written language. Summary: This session discusses a study of college students with and without developmental language disorder (DLD), who were compared on measures of how they plan for writing; how they revise their writing; and measures of length, complexity, and error production in handwritten and typed expository writing samples. Results suggest that typing provides longer samples and similar measures of errors and complexity compared to handwritten samples.

Summary: Each year, parents and educators download hundreds of millions of educational apps. However, there is limited research on the efficacy of these apps. This course covers how school-based SLPs are incorporating these apps in their intervention sessions as well as the need for a tool to critically evaluate apps used in educational settings.

Then, members of the Boston Children's Hospital's Cochlear Implant team discuss (a) the interdisciplinary evaluation process for determining candidacy for cochlear implantation, (b) the institution's aural rehabilitation protocol post-surgery, (c) specific outcome measures used to determine benefit, and (d) initial audiological outcomes for cochlear implant users with single-sided deafness.
