Summary: This course features a lively discussion with experts in speech-language pathology and telepractice from Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, Italy, and the U.S. Each panelist describes the practice of speech-language pathology in their respective part of the world, highlights the challenges and modifications required in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and discusses the inclusion of telepractice in daily service delivery. Panelists also explore the projected impact of remote delivery models on the practice of speech-language pathology worldwide. Summary: This session is a clinical tutorial that uses cases examples to integrate the practices of language sample analysis and fluency assessment. It focuses on the implementation of fluency codes in narrative retell language samples. Speakers provide information on how to identify and accurately code specific types of disfluencies within a narrative retell language sample. The tutorial provides clinicians with practical tools to use in particular narrative retell language samples to assess fluency and language production skills in bilingual and monolingual children. Summary: The majority of children with repaired cleft palate receive speech intervention, which typically occurs in the school setting. This session shares effective, evidence-based techniques for remediation of cleft-related speech errors. The speaker provides an overview of cleft-related speech errors, highlighting appropriate intervention targets and corresponding elicitation strategies, and summarizes the most up-to-date evidence regarding treatment approaches. The speaker also discusses techniques for establishing successful collaborations with SLPs on the craniofacial team.

Summary: This SIG 1 activity focuses on how speech sound disorders (SSDs) can have an impact on children’s literacy skills and development. The first article describes the phonological awareness (PA) skills of children with SSDs and compares the relationships between types of speech errors to strengths and weaknesses in their phonological awareness abilities. The second article is a tutorial that aims to provide evidence that supports the use of print and print referencing in speech therapy sessions with children who have SSDs. The third article examines the available evidence for intervention frameworks that support literacy skill development, specifically within the context of SSD intervention. The fourth article reviews why SSDs put children at risk for word reading difficulties and how speech-language pathologists can integrate foundational skills to reduce this risk.

Summary: This session reviews how to collaboratively determine educational need for voice disorder treatment within the school setting. The speaker discusses how school-based clinicians can advocate for students with voice disorders and their families by facilitating improved access to high-quality and comprehensive voice diagnostic and treatment services. The session explores practical strategies for collaboratively screening, assessing, and treating voice disorders as well as strategies for recruiting and leading a team of medical and educational professionals, school staff, student peers, and family members. Lastly, the session explores how to advocate for students with voice disorders in the classroom and how to create a school environment that supports healthy voice use.
