Summary: Fingerspelling is prominent among educated deaf and culturally Deaf adults who use American Sign Language (ASL). Research suggests that d/Deaf signers use the same cognitive processes in "reading" fingerspelling that they use in reading print. This session reports comparative measures of speechreading across three tests of varied difficulty in 44 d/Deaf adults who also took a pseudo-word fingerspelling test presented with and without mouth movements. Presenters translate findings to encourage clinical research and practical application for audiologists and speech-language pathologists working with hard-of-hearing and deaf adults. Summary: This session summarizes a study of two groups of college students (25 with developmental language disorder [DLD], 25 with typical language [TL]) who were compared on measures of length, complexity, and quality of their expository written language. This session discusses the practical implications of the study's findings and the importance of individual strengths-and-needs assessment and intervention for this population.
