Summary: The degree of hearing aid adoption as a treatment to lessen communication difficulties has remained essentially unchanged over the past four decades. Summary: Adult and pediatric survivors of critical illness commonly experience post-intensive care syndrome (PICS, or PICS-p in children), consisting of impairments in mental health (e.g., anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms), cognition, and physical function. These impairments are associated with worse health-related quality of life and can persist for years after discharge from the intensive care unit. This session describes the incidence of and risk factors for such symptoms as well as interventions to prevent and manage these impairments.

Summary: This session reviews prenatal airway development and abnormalities that can impact communication and swallowing. The speaker reviews different levels of respiratory support from low-flow nasal cannula to mechanical ventilation and speaking valve application for patients who are tracheostomy dependent with or without ventilator dependence. The goal of this session is to expand understanding of anatomy and physiology as well as the impact of anomalies on communication and swallowing.

Summary: Medicare beneficiaries are an important patient population to consider when developing a business model, and SLPs in private practice need to know how to enroll in and bill Medicare to ensure they are compliant with federal law. This course walks through the basics of Medicare credentialing, coding and billing, and documentation to ensure successful processing of claims and medical records that will stand up to scrutiny if audited.

Summary: Coverage of and payment for SLP services for patients with complex medical conditions requires SLPs to navigate provider guidelines and payment systems related to multiple sites of service and multiple episodes of care. SLPs must also exhibit professional mastery of the principles of clinical decision-making pertaining to a continuum of care from intensive skilled treatment to maintenance intervention and termination of SLP care. This session presents critical information to support accurate payment for SLP services provided to patients with complex medical conditions. The speakers share a pediatric and an adult case scenario and provide useful resources.
