Summary: This on demand webinar explores how the history of African American Language (AAL) relates to culturally sensitive and responsive practices in communication disorders. Summary: This journal self-study course is composed of papers from the 7th Aging and Speech Communication Conference (April 2019). The articles cover a range of topics about speech processing in normal aging, including changes in auditory pathways and cortical structures in older adults with and without hearing loss; the relationship between cognitive skills and hearing performance in older adults; speech perception of older and younger adults when certain linguistic factors are manipulated; and age-related effects of processing accented speech in native and non-native speakers.

Summary: As students move from learning to read to reading to learn, they step onto the path toward becoming active, independent, strategic academic learners. This session explains strategy intervention, which is supported by a strong body of research evidence and well-suited to the expertise and resources of school-based SLPs. The speaker discusses selecting teachable strategies, teaching through spoken interactions around written texts, connecting to the classroom, and moving strategies from SLP teaching tools toward student learning tools. Summary: Written expression is one of the four major modalities (along with listening comprehension, spoken expression, and reading decoding and comprehension) that SLPs need to assess when identifying language and literacy disorders among school-age children and adolescents. This session shares a framework for analyzing the variety of tasks used for written language assessment on standardized tests and considers pros and cons of each to inform decisions regarding eligibility and dismissal. The session includes opportunities to practice applying a multilevel language analysis system to written language samples of students with varied profiles. Summary: This course discusses the role of teachers in the referral process for children and adolescents with developmental language disorder (DLD) who speak a nonmainstream dialect. The speaker discusses nonmainstream American English (NMAE) dialects, the role of interprofessional practice within the schools, teacher referrals for special education services, and guidelines that SLPs can use when collaborating with teachers to make appropriate referrals for students with DLD who speak NMAE.
