Summary: This course is composed of a journal article that discusses person-centered assessment methods and tools for primary progressive aphasia (PPA). Using case studies, the authors define and present components of person-centered assessment, outline the R.A.I.S.E. assessment framework, and discuss its practical applications for assessment and treatment of individuals with PPA as well as for working with their care partners.

Summary: There is a high prevalence of brain injury among youth and adults in the criminal justice system. The cognitive-communication impairments associated with brain injury can be a risk factor for both justice involvement and recidivism as well as barrier to successful community reintegration. This session focuses on the emerging role of SLPs with this underserved population, which may include assessment and intervention but may also include advocacy as well as training and education of front-line staff and justice professionals.

Summary: This course provides a framework to guide school-based SLPs who support child and adolescent feeding and swallowing needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Summary: This presentation highlights case studies exhibiting the SLP's role in assessing and treating previously healthy toddlers with disorders of consciousness in the acute rehab setting. These case studies demonstrate the opportunities and challenges of utilizing the pediatric Coma Recovery Scale when assessing these patients, the relationship between emerging oral motor skills and cognition, and treatment approaches for returning to PO intake in this population. Finally, these case studies highlight how interdisciplinary collaboration is one of the keys to success with this patient population.

Summary: Modifying diet consistencies is one of the more common approaches to dysphagia care. However, much controversy remains regarding how SLPs tackle decision-making and about the actual modification and measurement of liquids and foods in terms of nutrition and safety as primary goals of dysphagia treatment. This session addresses the complexities in both processes, with a focus on achieving the best outcomes for each patient.

Summary: This session introduces technological, procedural, and analysis factors that optimize objectivity and reproducibility of clinically valid videofluoroscopic measurements made from modified barium swallow (MBS) studies. The speaker addresses the importance and preferred practices for learning, training, and measurement skill calibration and demonstrates positive and negative influences of clinical bias on VFSS measurement and interpretation.

Summary: This trio of SIG 13 articles provides information regarding managing and treating dysphagia with adult patients. First, Abrams and co-authors underscore the importance of hydration and discovered that individuals consuming thickened liquids are often at risk for dehydration. Factors to increase fluid intake through different strategies are discussed. Next, Arguello and Kerr discuss the mechanism of a facial burn injury and how it may cause functional impairments that can be directly impacted through early intervention utilizing speech-language pathology services. Finally, Warner and colleagues completed a pilot study investigating the prevalence of pretreatment dysphagia in oncologic patients and individual factors influencing post treatment dysphagia.
