Improving Training Methods to Advance Clinical Practice (S08103173)

Course Description

This SIG 8 activity includes models of small-group or experiential learning training opportunities to facilitate sustainable prevention focused hearing initiatives using two distinct examples of small-group based training models. With continued challenges to meet hearing health goals of hearing conservation and early diagnosis of hearing loss, novel public health–minded initiatives may support sustainable and effective practices to meet these goals. In the work by Tinsley et al., authors outline how simulation training may support gaps in hearing screening goals for the adult population. Using a simulated adult standardized patient approach, the authors describe the process and efficacy to train speech-language pathology graduate students to conduct adult hearing screenings. The authors describe demonstrated effects on student perception of learning and growth in conducting hearing screenings and appropriate mastery of skills. In Kulinski et al., the authors outline the use of small-group based training to improve the efficacy and longevity of appropriate hearing protector fit testing for sustainable and effective training for a group of new military recruits. The authors describe the protocol including hearing protector fit testing before and after small-group training on appropriate fit and sustainability of training after 1 month. This activity outlines how efficient protocols around experience and training may fill gaps in hearing health care needs due to time or contextual restraints.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • describe the process of simulation training or group-based training for clinical education or patient-focused training
  • describe strategies for evaluation of efficacy for sustained benefit for group-based training or practice environments

Assessment Type
Self-assessment—Think about what you learned and report on the Completion Form how you will use your new knowledge.
