Treatment Approaches for Individuals With Neurogenic Communication Disorders (S02103041)

Course Description


In this SIG 2 activity, articles explore treatment approaches for neurogenic communication disorders. The first article includes a meta-analysis of the effects of cognitive rehabilitation on pragmatic language after traumatic brain injury. The second article describes steps for improving palliative, person-centered speech-language pathology services for individuals with primary progressive aphasia. The third article describes implementing shared decision making with individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis related to dysarthria and dysphagia treatment.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • apply the protocols described into their treatment practices to improve pragmatic language abilities in adults with traumatic brain injury
  • list the steps that speech-language pathologists can take to improve the intervention experiences for their clients living with primary progressive aphasia
  • apply the shared decision-making process to dysphagia and dysarthria management of individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis using case study examples
